love, legos, and mortal combat on the road to stonehenge, part 1

if life really is like a box of chocolates then carol and i definitely agree that there’s no point in leaving any in the box. we both believe in making hay while the sun shines, and using as many metaphors in the same paragraph as possible. okay, maybe that’s just me when it comes to...

Daz Vernon - Just another day in paradise! I take my hat off to you. Renting a car AND getting close to the local wildlife! Next you’ll be telling us about the time you went photographing lions in a golf buggy!

I was once asked for directions in my home city, Nottingham, by a Canadian lady who had been equally as foolish and rented a car. She’d spent the previous 45 minutes just trying to get out of the city centre and by the time she got to me had started gnawing on the steering wheel she was so tense!

She couldn’t cope with how “narrow and over-crowded” the streets were: it was a really quiet day in my opinion. She left vowing never to drive again! Until she got back to Canada anyway.

Carol - I had forgotten what a crazy day that was! I have never felt so “off the beaten path” in a large city.

August 30, 2010 - 10:45 pm

Jimmy Allison - If your only driving experiences are in the USA then you’ll never be able to understand the UK driving experience. It truly is a world of its own. Even on a motorcycle it is a challenge, but it is the greenest (multiple hues)place I have ever been.

Will, I’d have more surprised if you hadn’t taken pictures.

Chris - Gotta love it!! I’ve driven cars just about everywhere. By far the worst place I’ve encountered is Ireland. They drive like maniacs, the streets are ridiculously narrow/torturous and lined with 10 foot tall shrubs. And massive tour buses are around every corner – and in your lane. FYI, your credit card won’t provide accident insurance in Ireland. Most of the rental cars are missing a hubcap or two, as well as the side mirror – all causalties of the Irish drivers.

hopefully, davey coombs, a friend and the editor of racer x illustrated won’t begrudge me too much for borrowing the title of his monthly column for my own blog post this week. i try to be original, but i just couldn’t think of anything better because it’s time to take stock of where this blog...

Pat Poel - I read your blog because in the vast ocean of the Internet it is one of the little islands of refuge from the rolling waves of crap that many seem to think is content. (You also happen to have some pretty darn cool pictures as well.)

August 3, 2010 - 9:14 pm

Marco - Will – your pictures always cause me to relect deeper on the subjects you chose to photograph. Most times I just breeze through picture books and such but your shots always tell a story that catches my interest. These are no different. Excellent!

August 3, 2010 - 11:04 pm

Jimmy Allison - Will, I look forward to your blog and your words of wisdom that continue to inspire me. The pictures are awesome too!

August 3, 2010 - 11:28 pm

Amber Hughes - Will, in your post you say that you sometimes inspire. I have to disagree. You always inspire me, Andy (my husband), and my mom and dad. Andy and I share the same email address and I know he reads every post that comes through. Also, either Andy or I read your posts to my parents. You are one in a million! You are an inspiration beyond your understanding. Thanks for sharing! Love you!

August 4, 2010 - 8:14 am

carol - great words, baby. love you.

August 4, 2010 - 10:33 pm

RE - owp, pat (the first person to comment on this post} said it very well. ditto from me.

August 9, 2010 - 11:07 am

LawDog - Dude…been busy here at the office. Every time I read one of your posts, I sit back and say….damn. I feel like I am pretty tough, but I don’t know if I could put up the fight that you have. Guess I should have known that deep down every single problem you face is met with the same response. “come get some”

September 4, 2010 - 5:50 pm

steve - Wil, looking at your photo’s and I compare them to mine like I compare my riding to Dungys!

stepping into the light

i’m going to perform a classic summertime tv trick here and do a rerun. it’s not because, like tv programmers, i have nothing new to say. it’s just that i sort of let that last photograph slip into the end of last week’s blog without really saying what i wanted to about it. hopefully the...

jj welch - I loved that picture the first moment I saw it. I spoke volumes to me about you and where you are and have been. My own battles pale by comparison to yours, a fact I remind myself of often when I want to quit or give in. I am so glad that you “made” this photograph because it’s one of many to come.

July 22, 2010 - 9:53 am

Gary E. Terry - I can relate to the feeling this photo elicits.. Went thru my own dark days. Didn’t have the ability to capture it on film though.

July 26, 2010 - 10:53 pm

Marco - What I interpreted in the shot, Will, was you standing tall, erect, confident and strong. A symbol of your hard work, each and every day until the one day comes when you can finally put the chair away for good. A great picture.

August 28, 2010 - 9:38 am

Carol - This self portrait will be famous.

August 28, 2010 - 10:41 am

Kim DeArmond - I agree, if this portrait is not already famous…. it should be!

day 365

366 days ago i weighed 185 pounds and even though my fortieth birthday was just over the horizon, i was in the best shape of my life.  i had twenty-five years of riding and racing dirtbikes under my belt and had been a seasonal snow skier for even longer.  i was finally finding the athletic...

Hoyt - Will,

This story is told about Winston Churchill: A few years after
World War II he was asked to give a graduation speech at an American university. When the time came, after introductions, etc., he walked to the podium, paused, looked at the class and gave the following speech:

Never, — never,– Never!–NEVER!– NEVER give up! And then sat down.

This is you Will. I am proud to be your –

Dad

July 16, 2010 - 8:42 am

Fred Overstreet - “Each great journey begins with 1 step” someone famous said that and I know not who. You are an inspiration. Good luck to you and Carol.

July 17, 2010 - 11:01 am

Tony Eeds - Will:

I have followed your progress over this last year and remembered often the infectious smile and determination that I noticed when I first met you at DW so many years ago.

You are an inspiration to all of us that face adversity that we perceive as limiting. Clearly, you have not accepted your limits and I personally doubt that you ever will.

Keep up the struggle as I know you will and as others have said … never give up the fight!
